The Rule of Thumb
Most households should pump every 3–5 years. The right interval for your home depends on tank size, how many people live there, and how much water you push through the system.
A Simple Schedule Guide
1,000-gallon tank: 1–2 people, about every 5 years; 3–4 people, about every 3–4 years; 5+ people, about every 2–3 years. 1,500-gallon tank: 3–4 people, about every 4–5 years; 5+ people, about every 3 years. Garbage disposals add roughly a year of solids faster — shorten the interval if you use one heavily.
Why the Interval Matters
A septic tank separates solids from water. As sludge and scum layers build, solids start escaping into the drain field, clogging the soil a little at a time. That damage is slow, silent, and expensive: fields rarely recover once they’re loaded with solids.
Don’t Know When It Was Last Pumped?
If you bought the home without records, assume it’s due. A pump-out with an inspection gives you a baseline and a schedule. See our pumping service page or call (843) 555-0137.
